India Notifies New Rules for Maintaining Combined Registers Under Various Labor Laws

March 13, 2017

India’s Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified the Ease of Compliance to Maintain Registers under various Labour Laws Rules, 2017 ("Ease of Compliance Rules"). Employers will now be allowed to maintain consolidated registers in place of the registers required under nine national level labor laws, including the Mines Act and the Building and Other Construction Workers Act.

The Ease of Compliance Rules prescribe the following consolidated registers that are to be maintained by employers:

  • Employee Register;
  • Wage Register;
  • Register of Loans and Recoveries; and
  • Attendance Register.

The Ease of Compliance Rules has merged 56 registers into five registers. Employers may maintain the required consolidated registers in either hard copy or in electronic form so long as the integrity, serial number, and contents of the columns of the consolidated registers are not modified.
